Audi has unveiled the new Audi R18, their latest endurance racer and it looks like a cross between the Batmobile and the Gran Turismo 5 Red Bull X1 virtual race car. The Audi R18 racer will enter testing on April 24th, 2011, at Le Mans, before its first race at the 6 hour race at Spa-Francorchamps on May the 8th, 2011.
The Audi R18 was premiered at Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt with the hope for a tenth Le Mans success in 2011.
The Audi R18 features a single component carbon fiber monocoque, and LED headlights shaped as �1', to inspire associations with Audi�s historic brand logo. The development of the Audi R18 started in 2009, with the race car being designed for progressive electrification.
For this race car Audi have opted for a smaller 3.7-liter V6 TDI unit, The company have chosen to stck with the TDI diesel engine which saw its first victorious in 2006 as they say it is the most most efficient motor.
Another new development is the six-speed transmission in the Audi R18 which has been specifically modified for use with the smaller engine.
