2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

In conjunction with Tokyo Motor Show 2007, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) - Subaru automobiles manufacturer - has announced the introduction of the all-new Subaru Impreza WRX STI in Japan. The third generation WRX STI is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged boxer engine that kicks out 304hp @ 6,400 rpm and wrenches a maximum torque of 422Nm @ 4,400 rpm.

Featuring Subarus Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel Drive) and its trademark horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, the new WRX STI is now a five-door hatchback, in a clear departure from its 3-box saloon predecessors. Incidentally, this is the best-looking and most dressed-up - effort for the quirky-looking 3rd generation Impreza from Subaru. The widened body flares gives better presence, integrating function and aggressive look, while the interior design stresses cabin convenience and a top-of-the-line image.

The first-generation WRX STI model was based on the first Impreza WRX and was developed by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), an FHI subsidiary specialising in motorsports activities. Since its introduction in 1994, the WRX STI has established a solid reputation as a high-performance sports model. In the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) that requires participants to compete with production-based models, Subaru WRX STI models have proven track record of bringing Subaru three consecutive Manufacturers championship titles from 1995 to 1997. In this context, FHI plans to submit a Group N homologation application effective as of January 1, 2008 for the new WRX STI to FIA.

The introduction of the new WRX STI has completed the full lineup of the Impreza series in Japan. The Impreza 15S, 20S and S-GT models have been available since June 2007, each offering different levels of performance and comfort.

CCB gives up Peugeot in Malaysia

Cycle & Carriage Automobiles Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Cycle & Carriage Bintang (CCB) Bhd will cease operation as Peugeot franchise holder in Malaysia. CCB has recently notified Bursa Malaysia that it will not renew its franchise contract with Automobiles Peugeot of France when it expires by 31st December 2007.

CCB has also announced in its annual report that its Peugeot business arm had incurred net losses of RM250,000 in 2006 and RM1.77 million for the six months ended 30th June 2007. By giving up the Peugeot franchise, it is expected that funds released from the discontinuation of the business will be used to optimise the Groups working capital. For the record, CCB has held the Peugeot brand for the past five years.

Market talk has it that local automotive conglomerate Naza will take over from CCB next year as Peugeot sole distributor, franchise holder and of course, importer for future CBU Peugeot automobiles in Malaysia.

Tokyo 2007: Nissan Intima

Click on images to enlarge Nissans concept showcase at the Tokyo Motor Show 2007 with the most likelihood to make it to production could be the Intima. The prototype on display takes Nissan's Modern Living Concept into a new dimension with an interior that extraordinarily blends artistic forms, materials and illumination together.

Its exterior styling matches the interior's upmarket image, with a design that combines sharp-edged lines and fluid panel surfaces. Rich elegance is conveyed though Intima's arching side character line, while its crystal-like headlights and tail lamps, grille and wheels project an image of quality and refinement.

The highlight and talking piece of the Intima concept must be the front passenger's seat that swivels approximately 80 outwards, making it more comfortably accessible. Apart from that, both rear doors are rear-hinged and open backwards, further aiding ease of ingress and egress for the rear occupants.

Perhaps this will be the all-new Nissan Teana in 2009, minus some fanciful (read: less cost-effective) gadgets?

Next-Generation 660cc Engine Showcases Daihatsu Technology

Long-stroke technology contributes to excellent low-to mid-range torque characteristics, while extensive friction reduction and intake port shape optimization broaden the torque curve. This delivers extremely smooth acceleration from startup all the way to cruising speed. Fuel economy is also outstanding, thanks to compact combustion chambers for high combustion efficiency and optimized air-fuel swirl and tumble. (The engine is fitted in the Mira, Mira CUSTOM, ESSE and ATRAI WAGON and also the MOVE, and MOVE CUSTOM.)

Employing the world's first input-reduction type 3-shaft gear train configuration, this CVT attains high power transmission efficiency with reduced belt rotational speed. In addition to delivering about 10% better acceleration performance and about 15% better fuel economy, this CVT is among the world's lightest in its class at a mere 58kg. Every aspect of this next-generation CVT is optimized for mini vehicle applications.

Daihatsu OPCS (Omni-directional Pre-Crash Safety Support System)

Based on omni-directional detection by laser radar, this system supports accident avoidance in variety of scenarios.

This system is a further evolution of risk-minimizing active safety technology that activates a pre-crash safety system to automatically warn the driver and control the seat belts and brake system in case of an emergency by determining the distance to the preceding vehicle. Installed in the front and rear are two wide-angle laser radar units with front, rear and side sensing capability to detect obstacles including pedestrians in all directions of the vehicle's 360-degree circumference.

This technology has the potential to detect, for example, approaching vehicles at a frontal offset, previously a difficult task, thereby making it possible to help avoid accidents at intersections, through linkage with the pre-crash brake assist system. Also, through various linkages with the pre-crash safety system, this system can support steering maneuvers to avoid obstacles in the vehicle path, emit a warning in case a vehicle approaches from the rear when changing lanes, and so on. Therefore, it offers the potential for accident avoidance support in a wide variety of accident scenarios besides frontal collisions. This represents the most advanced fruits of Daihatsu's on going efforts to develop accident avoidance support technology for small vehicle application.

When the system detects a car, motorbike, etc, on course toward a collision with the vehicle. LED lamps flash in the direction of the approaching vehicle. This helps alert the operator of the approaching vehicle ot take action to avoid an accident.

A 3D display presents vehicle information and other safety information as easy-to-understand 3D images to facilitate driver awareness and recognition. Fascinating 3D display capabilities are leveraged to enhance navigation and traffic information presentation.

Toyota Hi-CT Concept (Tokyo Autoshow 2007)

The Hi-CT aims to offer a new "coolness" and new ways to have fun as a departure from conventional vehicles-an edgy, urban vehicle inspired by the thinking and lifestyles of youth.

* Offers a new kind of automotive "cool" and sense of enjoyment.
* Has a new look unconstrained by conventional vehicle size (length 3,330mm x width 1,695mm x height 1,780mm).
* Adopts plug-in hybrid technology, which allows it to charge from an external power source and gives it a greater driving range when running on its battery-powered motor; by placing the battery under the floor, achieves a highly efficient cabin with a higher driver position.
* Comes with an AC100V accessory socket that enables stored electricity-made possible by plug-in hybrid technology-to be used for a variety of applications.
* Features a removable rear trunk and a deck where surfboards, bicycles and other equipment can be loaded.
