Mahindra goes to U.S.

International requires a lot of courage especially in times like these. Though the auto industry seems to be recovering from the epidemic 'recession' , taking a big step now isnt considered great and playing safe is the only key to success. But if one gets success now too, then it should be considered a stepping stone for that brand.

Mahindra has done something similar. It is one of the few Indian companies to have made it to the international market and succesfully made themselves recoginzable among thousands of brands worldwide. Mahindra's latest venture is to introduce their Scorpio Getaway based 'Pik-Up' to the States. While the trucks are all set to go, there seems to be some delay with the issuance of emission certificate by the authorities there.

According to John Perez, CEO of Global Vehicles USA, Mahindra's distributor in U.S, the emissions tests have been carried on the trucks and the report is being submitted to the EPA for final approval. Approval will take another 30 days and then the import will take another 30. More than 300 dealers have been appointed and they will start functioning as soon as Mahindra gets a green signal.

There will be two versions of the pick up trucks- two door TR20 and four door crew cab TR40.

There will only be one engine option available, a slightly uptuned version of the 2.2L mHawk engine, which currently powers the Scorpio, Xylo and the Getaway here in India. Fuel economy is said to be around 30 mpg on the highway while they have a 1.3 ton load lugging capacity. Prices will start at around $22k.

With domestic players venturing out in global market and international players coming in India to set up their manufacturing plants, India will surely be able to stand neck to neck with other major players.

M&M joins the price rise trend!

Following the footsteps of Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra too have decided to hike their prices by up to Rs. 26,100. The firm has confirmed that the rise is due to the Bharat Stage IV emission norms and a partial rise due to price rise in commodities. However, according to a M&M spokesperson, the fuel price rise has also been taken into consideration while determining the new M&M prices.

The Mahindra & Mahindra flagship model, Scorpio will be now costlier by Rs. 10,300 and Rs. 17,500 (depending on model) than its earlier price. The Xylo will now cost about Rs. 15,900 more while the Bolero will be costlier by as much as Rs. 26,100.

The BS IV norms have become operational in 13 cities in India since the 1st of April. As a result, most of the car giants in India including Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota have hiked their car prices. It is because of the technological advancements required to make the cars BS IV compliant that the cars will have to be costlier now.

According to Arun Malhotra, Senior Vice President of Automotive Sector, Mahindra and Mahindra, the Primary reason for price hike across all vehicles is the rise in prices of the inputs required to make them.

BMW and Honda Siel Cars India have recently increased prices of their cars with Maruti Suzuki following suit. The main reason for the above manufacturers in increasing prices was also the rise in input costs along with the appreciation of foreign currency Yen. Hyundai is also expected to announce a price hike shortly.

According to Jnaneshwar Sen, Vice President Marketing, Honda Siel Cars India, the value of Yen has appreciated in the last few months along with the import content in their cars ranging from 24% in the City to 100% in the CRV which has increased the costs of manufacturing.

Fight for "The Cheapest"

EcoCa, a little know company in London, has its eye set upon snatching the 'Cheapest Car' title from Tata Nano, by churning out a 340cc two-seater petrol car for little less than a lakh! Even at this price tag, the company says, it will ensure healthy profit margins for the car makers.

The company is scouting for a joint- venture partner in India to build this car under the same brand name. EcoCa percieves India as a lucrative market to achieve the lowest possible price tag and yet be able to earn profit margins. Some Indian carmakers have positively shown keen interest in the company and the car, which seems, will directly compete with the Tata Nano. The prototype of the car has already been invited by the car makers, to evaluate the car's performance, fuel efficiency and safety standards. EcoCa's top choice is believed to be Mahindra & Mahindra. Top officials from M&M, however have refused to confirm any such development.

The small car in question is said to infuse an investment of 8 million pounds, whose design will be inline with the VW Beetle. The car will don a convertible roof and automatic gearbox. EcoKa will weigh less than 330kg and will boast a fuel efficiency of 27- 28 km/litre of petrol. Optional front bags will also be available.
