The fourth generation of Subaru Outback was introduced in April 2009 at New York Auto Show, fifteen years after the original Outback was introduced in the New York Auto Show. The Legacy was introduced in Japan May 20, 2009 .
The removal of soil increases to 8.7 mm in the (220), and is the eighth feature Subaru vehicle continuously variable transmission (CVT). The double-size sunroof is no longer available and has been reduced to a conventional size that does not extend over the rear seats. The turbocharged engine is also no longer available for North American markets.

The frameless side windows, are no longer, ending a tradition of Subaru started with the first generation Leone in the 1970s. The "D" pillar in the car is no longer covered in glass, also ending a design tradition established with the first generation. The front and rear bumper covers are no longer painted a contrasting color, but the plastic body cladding side continues.
In April 2009, Subaru USA announced the engines, equipment levels and prices beginning at U.S. $ 22,995.
