Like the 2005 Pontiac Bonneville similar, the standard uses the 3800 Buick Lucerne V6, with a Cadillac Northstar V8, available as an option. Thus equipped, the Lucerne became the first V8 engine for Buick, and the demise of the Roadmaster in 1996. The Lucerne is also available with the Corvette's Walk of magnetic control, active suspension technology.

The base price of Lucerne is lower than in the LeSabre, its predecessor, though the V8 option for the price to the price levels of the Park Avenue.

In keeping with Buick tradition, the Lucerne features "Ventiports" on the front fenders on the number of cylinders in the engine - three on each side for a V6 or four on each side for the Northstar V8.
